ICANN Cancels Meeting In Panama City Due To Zika Virus

February 5, 2016 by Michele Neylon

Earlier this evening ICANN announced that the scheduled meeting in June 2016 will not be held in Panama City.

The cancellation of the meeting and its change of location is due to concerns related to the recent outbreak of the Zika Virus.

ICANN will be holding a meeting in June, but where that meeting will be held has not been announced yet.

Many ICANN insiders suspect that ICANN will probably switch to one of its “safe” venues such as Singapore, which they’ve used a couple of times in the past when they felt obliged to relocate a meeting.

Here’s the official announcement:

ICANN56, scheduled to be held in Panama in June 2016, will be moved to another location due to the severity of the Zika Virus outbreak in the Latin America region. A search is currently underway to identify an alternate location where the Zika Virus is not a concern. We look forward to returning to Panama for a future ICANN Meeting.
