Hello Registry Picks up Automattic’s DotBlog

November 25, 2024 by Michele Neylon

At the recent ICANN meeting in Istanbul CIRA and SIDN unveiled the new name and brand for their cloud based domain registry backend service: “Hello Registry“.

Up until then the CIRA backend was known as “Fury” and had been chosen by a few country code managers and some gTLD types, including .ie, as their backend. A few months ago CIRA and SIDN announced a partnership to build a new registry backend and “Hello Registry” is that new service.

From April of next year the .blog registry will be switching over to Hello Registry as well.

This will be the third backend that .blog has used, having started out on Nominet, moving to Centralnic (Team Internet) and now moving to CIRA.

From a registrar perspective the backend switch does not bring any positive changes, though it will involve our teams having to do an integration and handle the migration on our side. Domains are a business with tight margins, so hopefully the move will be smooth.

At time of writing .blog has just over 300k domains, with over a third of them registered via Automattic’s own registrar.
