January 19, 2022 by Michele Neylon

ICANN Logo

ICANN has appointed John Crain as CTO. Okay, his official job title is more of a mouthful: ICANN Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer As far as I can tell he's been filling the role on an interim basis since the departure of David Conrad last year. For the last couple of years Crain was ICANN's Chief Security, Stability, and Resiliency Officer (CSSRO). … [Read more...] about ICANN Appoints John Crain CTO

ICANN Continues Virtual Meetings Ahead of Hybrid Switch

November 8, 2021 by Michele Neylon

ICANN Logo

(Republishing due to a technical issue!) ICANN has announced that their first public meeting of 2022 will not be "in person" and that they will stick to the "virtual" format. They have, however, stated that they want their June meeting, which is scheduled to be held in The Hague, to take place with a "hybrid" format. ICANN is notoriously conservative, so this … [Read more...] about ICANN Continues Virtual Meetings Ahead of Hybrid Switch

Some Changes at ICANN

ICANN's CEO publishes updates on the organisation from time to time. Yesterday his update was in relation to some staff changes. David Conrad will be leaving ICANN at the end of September. He's currently the organisation's CTO and has been heavily involved in a variety of technical projects internally and externally. Marby's blog post does not provide any explanation as … [Read more...] about Some Changes at ICANN

ICANN Expands Contractual Waiver for Security Issues to Registrars

August 17, 2021 by Michele Neylon

ICANN Logo

ICANN has announced that they are expanding the scope of contractual waivers for security issues to include registrars. That's a bit of a mouthful, so I'll try to unpack it a bit. Under normal circumstances both registrars and registries are bound by ICANN policies and contractual obligations. In simple terms this means that they only register and manage domain names when … [Read more...] about ICANN Expands Contractual Waiver for Security Issues to Registrars

ICANN Won’t Meet in Person in 2021

July 16, 2021 by Michele Neylon

ICANN officially announced its plans for the next meeting which was meant to be held in Seattle in October. It's going to be virtual. Again. I suspect that this will not sit well with some of the North American participants who would have been able to attend an "in person" event. However the situation globally is a lot less certain and most definitely not uniform. At time … [Read more...] about ICANN Won’t Meet in Person in 2021

ICANN Extends Travel Ban For Staff But Seattle Could Proceed

May 29, 2021 by Michele Neylon

We are now well over a year into a global pandemic. While the vaccine rollout in some parts of the world has been going well we are still a very long way off a full return to any semblance of normality. Many countries are still imposing travel restrictions, both on their own citizens as well as travellers to those countries. It's not surprising that ICANN has officially … [Read more...] about ICANN Extends Travel Ban For Staff But Seattle Could Proceed

No ICANN Face to Face Events Until After June

April 3, 2021 by Michele Neylon

Göran Marby

In a move that surprised absolutely nobody ICANN has formally extended their "travel ban" until the end of June 2021. Realistically I suspect that the suspension of travel and face to face events is going to be extended beyond June. In a blog post ICANN CEO Göran Marby outlined briefly the current state of play with respect to events, meetings and the ICANN offices. … [Read more...] about No ICANN Face to Face Events Until After June
