The .ie ccTLD is no longer under UCD’s official control. As of last week the .ie ccTLD has been formally redelegated by the IANA to IE Domain Registry CLG (IEDR, though they like to use the moniker “dotIE” these days)

IEDR have been running the .ie ccTLD for over 20 years, so in some respects the change was “purely” administrative. However for those of us more deeply involved in the Irish Internet community the way the .ie ccTLD was run and is now run is key. This is why the process that is followed when there is a request for a change of delegation is so important. The most recent one, which was successful, did not happen in a vacuum. The Irish government conducted a fairly detailed consultation on the .ie namespace back in 2024 which attracted a number of fairly detailed submissions. Following on from the consultation outputs the government then formally endorsed IE Domain Registry CLG to run the .ie ccTLD back in April. That meant that the request to IANA could proceed.
The change with the IANA registration means that the .ie ccTLD will be able to formally join the ccNSO if they so choose.
But more importantly it could be seen as being a nice way for the current CEO David Curtin to wrap up his tenure. Earlier this year Mr Curtin announced that he would be retiring this autumn and they have today announced who his replacement will be from October.
The new CEO for .ie will be Louise McKeown Doogan who was previously with a number of well known Irish internet infrastructure providers including Netsource, Magnet Networks and Speed Fibre Group. She has been with IEDR for a little under a year, where she has been their “Chief Growth Officer”.
Chair of the .IE Board of Directors, Neil Redmond, said: “I am delighted to welcome Louise as our incoming Chief Executive. She brings extensive senior leadership experience, together with a strong understanding of .IE, its responsibilities and its future opportunities. I would also like to thank David for his outstanding leadership and wish him every success for the remainder of his tenure.”
