Lufthansa & WeightWatchers Win URS

May 9, 2015 by Michele Neylon

The URS (Uniform Rapid Suspension System) is a new rights protection mechanism that was introduced as part of ICANN's New TLD rollout. Unlike the UDRP (Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy), if a complainant prevails in a URS they do not get the domain. All a URS can do is result in the domain being suspended for the rest of its registration period. Two URS decisions that were … [Read more...] about Lufthansa & WeightWatchers Win URS

DotSucks Takes The Prophylactic Metaphor Further Than INTA Member Might Like

May 4, 2015 by Michele Neylon

This week INTA, the International Trademark Association, is meeting in San Diego. As can be expected with any trademark show a lot of domain industry companies are in attendance. What, however, seems to be catching more attention than many others is the presence of the .sucks registry. As others have mentioned, Vox Populi have a big billboard on the side of a truck near … [Read more...] about DotSucks Takes The Prophylactic Metaphor Further Than INTA Member Might Like

.Us ccTLD Adopting URS From July 1 2014

June 12, 2014 by Michele Neylon

Neustar, who run the backend registry operations for .us and others, announced yesterday that the .us ccTLD will be adopting the URS from July 1st 2014. The URS  is a shorter and cheaper method of lodging a domain name dispute than the UDRP. Of course it's .us, so the terminology is a little different. In .us land a UDRP is a usDRP and a URS is a usRS. Unlike with gTLDs … [Read more...] about .Us ccTLD Adopting URS From July 1 2014

December 18, 2013 by Michele Neylon

The Pirate Bay has been jumping from one domain extension to another over the last few weeks. According to an article over on Torrent Freak, the site has another 70 domains that it could switch to. Here's what I get when I try to visit the site no matter which ccTLD it's using: I'm not sure how other ISPs are implementing the block, but if anyone has a screenshot … [Read more...] about UPC’s Filters Continue To Block Pirate Bay

Is Lady Gaga A Trademark Bully?

September 18, 2013 by Michele Neylon

Lady Aga holding page

In the last couple of days there's been some media coverage in Ireland of a case involving a small Irish business and Lady Gaga. Some people are crying foul and accusing Lady Gaga and her lawyers of being heavy-handed and that their actions were tantamount to bullying. While the Irish Independent's coverage of the story is comprehensive I wanted to dig a little deeper as … [Read more...] about Is Lady Gaga A Trademark Bully?

Chanel Domain Seizure Page

January 28, 2013 by Michele Neylon

Chanel is targeted by companies selling cheaper knock offs of their products, as are most brands. They've probably been pursuing and seizing domains etc., for years, but I'd never landed on one until today. This is what I got: The message contains a very clear warning to would be counterfeiters (emphasis added) : This domain was once owned by a seller of replica … [Read more...] about Chanel Domain Seizure Page

Earlier this morning they released an infographic that is packed with information, facts and figures about their new domain name dispute resolution … [Read more...] about Afnic Release Infographic On Domain Disputes

October 5, 2012 by Michele Neylon

The US Department of Commerce's Larry Strickling has written to ICANN again. This time it's about new TLDs, the RAA, law enforcement and trademark protections in new TLDs. By the tone and choice of words it sounds like the US Department of Commerce either assumes that ICANN will be able to force registrars to agree to the LEA demands or is happy with the concessions … [Read more...] about Strickling To Crocker – ICANN Needs To Do More To Protect IP
