ICANN Expands Contractual Waiver for Security Issues to Registrars

August 17, 2021 by Michele Neylon

ICANN Logo

ICANN has announced that they are expanding the scope of contractual waivers for security issues to include registrars. That's a bit of a mouthful, so I'll try to unpack it a bit. Under normal circumstances both registrars and registries are bound by ICANN policies and contractual obligations. In simple terms this means that they only register and manage domain names when … [Read more...] about ICANN Expands Contractual Waiver for Security Issues to Registrars

PIR (.org) Hiring CTO

August 15, 2021 by Michele Neylon

PIR aka the .org registry, is hiring for the role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Up until 2018 PIR did not have a CTO, which is when they hired DNS veteran Joe Abley to fill the role. Fast forward three years and Abley has moved on to pastures new (he's now over at Neustar / GoDaddy registry doing funky DNS stuff) and so the role is up for grabs again. The job is being … [Read more...] about PIR (.org) Hiring CTO

Bhavin Turakhia’s Email Venture Gains Big Backer

August 3, 2021 by Michele Neylon

Bhavin Turakhia is a name that is very well known in the domain and internet business. His exit from Directi and his ongoing investment in domains via Radix Registry means that Bhavin's name has strong links with the domain name business. However Bhavin's also been dabbling in other areas, including messaging and email. Earlier today it was announced that … [Read more...] about Bhavin Turakhia’s Email Venture Gains Big Backer

Nominet logo (2015)

Yesterday Nominet announced who would be members of the newly formed ".UK Registry Advisory Council". The Council was announced several months ago, but the actual selection process for members only concluded last week. Unlike with the Board elections where all members vote to select one or more representatives from across the entire Nominet membership, the UKRAC's … [Read more...] about Nominet Announces Newly Formed Advisory Council

ICANN Won’t Meet in Person in 2021

July 16, 2021 by Michele Neylon

ICANN officially announced its plans for the next meeting which was meant to be held in Seattle in October. It's going to be virtual. Again. I suspect that this will not sit well with some of the North American participants who would have been able to attend an "in person" event. However the situation globally is a lot less certain and most definitely not uniform. At time … [Read more...] about ICANN Won’t Meet in Person in 2021

CIRA to Provide DoH to Canadian Firefox Users

July 9, 2021 by Michele Neylon

CIRA, the .ca domain name registry, will be providing DNS over HTTPS for Firefox users in Canada. So what's that all about? In common with many domain name registries, CIRA has diversified over the last few years. Offering DNS based services is a logical extension for a domain name registry, as the larger ones will have built out quite a lot of technical infrastructure … [Read more...] about CIRA to Provide DoH to Canadian Firefox Users

Brexit Impacted EU Domains Now “Withdrawn”. What Next?

July 7, 2021 by Michele Neylon

On July 1st any domain names that were impacted by the UK's withdrawal from the EU, Brexit, were moved to a status of "WITHDRAWN". This means that not only is the domain no longer "in zone" but it's also no longer in the original registrar's control either. This is yet another step in the process that the European Commission decided on in order for .eu domain names that had … [Read more...] about Brexit Impacted EU Domains Now “Withdrawn”. What Next?

ICANN Extends Travel Ban For Staff But Seattle Could Proceed

May 29, 2021 by Michele Neylon

We are now well over a year into a global pandemic. While the vaccine rollout in some parts of the world has been going well we are still a very long way off a full return to any semblance of normality. Many countries are still imposing travel restrictions, both on their own citizens as well as travellers to those countries. It's not surprising that ICANN has officially … [Read more...] about ICANN Extends Travel Ban For Staff But Seattle Could Proceed
