The board of the IE Domain Registry are to vote on the proposed change to the registry rules governing “personal” IE domains.
The registry consulted the main stakeholders prior to sending the proposal to the board for vote.
It looks likely that the change will be introduced within the next two months.
How nice it is of the board of IEDR to pretend it is involved in the Irish domain names industry. 🙂 There is one group of stakeholders that were not consulted on this – the current registrants of .ie domain names. Perhaps ComReg has the final say on this one.

It would be quite hard for the IEDR to get any feedback from registrants with the current structures.

Well it might have been a good thing for them to ask Michele,
But given that none of the board of IEDR has any recognised expertise in the hosting/domains business, they wouldn’t know what to do with such feedback. I think that it was David Curtin’s idea and the planks on the board were just rubberstamping it. It is actually a good idea and clears up a lot of the problems associated with such domains.
Perhaps ComReg could introduce some kind of .ie domain registrants forum for feedback on this kind of thing.

The problem with any government agency is the bureaucracy. If ComReg were to setup anything to do with the IE namespace I can see it being populated with people who have either far too much time on their hands, inflated egos and a total lack of the clue factor.
It would make a lot more sense in my mind if the structure were changed to something more akin to that of AFNIC or Nominet, where policy matters can be discussed openly and there is a general feeling of “ownership” and involvement.
As things stand only a tiny portion of the IEDR reseller / registrar base even bothered to give feedback on an important policy change. I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that the more vocal critics weren’t among that group

A structure based on the Nominet/Afnic approach would be far better and would be far more representative.
The recently enacted legislation was introduced because of the historical incompetence of the management and board of IEDR in handling .ie ccTLD and the need to protect the .ie ccTLD.
Perhaps there was an element of a forgone conclusion about this and few of the registrars/resellers were even bothered about it. The core of .ie registrations are still business registrations.
