Nominet Considering Dropping Mailing Lists in Favour of Forums

August 30, 2007 by Michele Neylon

Nominet currently has a number of mailing lists which are open to members. Some of the lists are for announcements, others for technical matters and others for policy.

In the last couple of days Nominet members and list members have been asked to express a preference for future communication, as some people it would seem are in favour of forums over mailing lists.

Personally I prefer mailing lists for a number of reasons:

  • I will always check my mail
  • I don’t have to go to a website to participate
  • I can follow previous discussions easily in my mail archives
  • It’s easy to see a specific person’s opinion by looking at what they sent

Forums are NOT the place to discuss policies.

While forums might be a place for some people to exchange views I don’t think you would see as much high quality discussion from the busier members who, like me, maybe checking mail all day, but probably don’t have time to be checking forums all day.

Of course Nominet is a member driven organisation on many levels, so ultimately its members will decide.
