History and Future of DNS in London

December 28, 2007 by Michele Neylon

Desiree Miloshevic will be talking at the Oxford Internet Institute on January 28th in London.

This open public forum will look at the history and future of the
Internet Domain Name System (DNS). It will provide an opportunity to
commemorate Jon Postel by looking back at the 25 year history of the
DNS but also the 10 years of its management under ICANN; and a vision
of what the future holds over the coming years.

The event is sponsored by Afilias.

I probably won’t make it, as I have a thing in Dublin the following evening and a trip to LA the week before, so let us know how it was if you can

In all, it was a good use of an afternoon. Jonathan Zittrain gave a great presentation on the history of DNS (bits of which were later disputed by members of the audience) and it was interesting to hear how we ended up where we are. Apparently there are 20bn DNS lookups every day – and nobody knows they’re even happening.

I’ve done a fuller write up on our blog here: What’s in a name? They said the video would be put online, but I haven’t tracked it down yet.
