Going To ICANN 47 Durban? Check The Hotel Restrictions!

ICANN’s first public meeting of 2013 will be held in Beijing in April, but they’ve opened registration for the subsequent one in Durban, South Africa in July.

The July meeting – ICANN 47 – will be held in Durban International Convention Centre with hotel accommodation available in the surrounding area.

However attendees need to be careful when booking as the cancellation policies are pretty restrictive (emphasis added):

Payment: A one (1) nights deposit is required to secure your room on submission of your booking. in order for your booking to be confirmed. The balance of you accommodation is due by the 31st March 2013.
Cancellations and No Shows
All cancellations must be received in writing. If received before 31st March 2013 a full refund will be passed less a 15% administration fee. After this date no refunds will be processed, but delegates can be substituted.
No-shows and cancellations after 31st March 2013, will be liable for the full fee.

So unless you cancel 3 months in advance you lose the entire fee for staying at the hotel? Wow! That’s pretty horrendous! I’m not sure if it’s better or worse than the conditions you’d get via Hotels.com

Apart from the hotel details you can also register for the meeting and check the visa requirements – for most EU citizens it’s merely a formality.
