ICANN Puts Final Nail In Coffin of DotConnectAfrica Bid

As most observers of ICANN know, there were two applicants for the .africa new TLD.

The second applicant, dotConnectAfrica, did not have the broad support that a “geo” TLD would need in order to meet the criteria laid out in the ICANN newTLD application guidebook.

Over the past few months dotConnectAfrica have tried every method imaginable, and a few that most wouldn’t think of, to retain their application. However time and again their efforts have failed.

The most recent set of documents released by the new gTLD committee of ICANN’s board includes a resolution dealing with this .africa bid:

c.   Reconsideration Request 13-4

Whereas, DotConnectAfrica Trust’s (“DCA Trust”) Reconsideration Request, Request 13-4, sought reconsideration of the Board action (through the New gTLD Program Committee) on 4 June 2013, accepting advice from ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee regarding DCA Trust’s new gTLD application for .AFRICA, and determining that this particular new gTLD application will not be approved.

Whereas, the BGC considered the issues raised in Reconsideration Request 13-4.

Whereas, the BGC recommended that Reconsideration Request 13-4 be denied because DCA Trust has not stated proper grounds for reconsideration.

Resolved (2013.08.13.NG04), the New gTLD Program Committee adopts the BGC Recommendation on Reconsideration Request 13-4

Which effectively kills off the bid completely.. or at least one would assume it does .. though every time observers think that this bid is dead it finds a way of coming back .. like a zombie . ..
