Registration Operations Association Kick Off Meeting at ICANN 51

Registrars and registries have to work together. It’s a reality. While relations between the two groups can be fantastic, there are also plenty of instances where at the operational level things are a little “strained”. Those issues stem a lot of the time from technical issues, limitations and possibly “design choices”. There are a lot of very intelligent people working in domain name registrars and registries, but that doesn’t mean that they always make ideal choices and decisions. A lot of the time this is due to a lack of co-ordination.

Scott Hollenbeck (and others) have been discussing these issues on and off for the last couple of years. With the advent of new tlds some of the lingering problems that many of us in industry have been suffering almost quietly (I did say “almost”) have started surfacing more and more.

So over the last few weeks Scott has been doing an admirable job of explaining the issues and proposing a potential solution.

You can read his posts here, here and here.

Lucky for Scott he’s not only a smart guy, but he also works for a fairly big company in the domain industry.

So if you’re attending the upcoming ICANN meeting in LA next month (ie. in a couple of weeks time) then you might be interested in the “kick off” meeting that’s been organised.

When: October 16th 2014

Where: Hyatt Regency (ICANN meeting venue)

Full details including registration here. There’s even a draft agenda!
