John Oliver Just Gave DotNYC Free Advertising

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months you’re probably aware of John Oliver’s hilarious TV show “Last Week Tonight”. It airs on HBO at 11pm, but has also been picked up by Sky and other channels overseas – plus, since it’s 2014, most of the content is also available on YouTube a few hours after airing.

Last night one of the segments focussed on former mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg and his rather odd domain registration choices. As the .nyc top level domain launched very recently it sort of made sense that Bloomberg would register a couple of .nyc domains, but Andrew’s post (linked to previously) highlighted how many really negative and rather odd ones he got.

So of course John Oliver did a segment on it (NSFW):

In the segment John Oliver gives viewers a simple overview of .nyc and even tells them where to register them. Whether this will lead to a boost in registrations or not remains to be seen, but in terms of exposure I can’t see Neustar complaining.

(Hat tip to the Neustar staffer who posted a link to the video earlier!)
