Tech Heavyweights To Congress: Transition Has Our Support Do Not Delay It

September 12, 2016 by Michele Neylon

Earlier today some of the biggest names in the tech industry sent a letter to Congress in support of the IANA transition and urging Congress not to delay it.

The IANA transition relies on the expiry of the contract between the US Government’s Department of Commerce and ICANN which is scheduled for the end of this month.
As has previously been noted some conservative politicians, most notably Senator Ted Cruz, have been very vocal in their criticism of the move and want to block it in Congress.

In today’s letter, which you can read in full below, the companies underline several of the supposed problems that Cruz and others have referred to and underline their support for the transition proposal.

As they point out, the global internet serves US interests. They also underline that the transition proposal more than effectively addresses many of the concerns that have been previously voiced and includes safeguards for human rights and freedom of speech.

The letter has been signed by, amongst others:

  • The Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2coalition)
  • ARIN
  • NetChoice
  • Amazon
  • Facebook
  • Google
  • GoDaddy
  • Endurance
  • cPanel
  • Cloudflare
  • Afilias
  • TheDNA
  • Dyn
  • Public Interest Registry
  • Yahoo
  • Twitter
  • Tucows
  • SingleHop
  • OnApp

Here it is in its entirety:
