Which TLDs Brands Are Registering

October 31, 2016 by Michele Neylon

MarkMonitor has released a graphic illustrating which new top level domains brands are registering domain names in. For those unfamiliar with them, MarkMonitor is a “corporate” registrar, so their core business is handling domain registrations for brands and trademark holders.

According to MarkMonitor’s data the top 20 extensions are:

  1. .sucks
  2. .porn
  3. .adult
  4. .news
  5. .online
  6. .reviews
  7. .shop
  8. .support
  9. .公司
  10. .nyc
  11. .video
  12. .xyz
  13. .sex
  14. .global
  15. .london
  16. .club
  17. .cloud
  18. .store
  19. .social
  20. .website

Unfortunately there’s no indication of whether the domains are being registered to use or simply as “defensive” registrations. However it’s probably quite safe to assume that most of the registrations in .sucks, .porn, .adult and .sex are defensive in nature. There’s also no indication of volumes, though it’s interesting to note that the recently launched .shop is already number 7 in the list.
