ICANN HR Shares Some Data On Staffing

July 2, 2016 by Michele Neylon

How diverse is ICANN? While the recently published Afnic report gives some insights, it didn’t explore ICANN staff in any detail.

ICANN’s HR team, however, did share some data on ICANN’s staff diversity during a session at the ICANN meeting in Helsinki earlier this week.

Some interesting data was shared about how ICANN handle their HR overall, but the bit that caught my eye was in respect to gender. 53.8% of ICANN’s staff are female:

What’s also interesting is the average age. The current average age of an ICANN employee is 41.3. They’ve got staff of all ages, but the bulk of them are in the age range of 30 to 50:

As an organisation ICANN has been growing in terms of headcount over the last few years, so any figures around length of service aren’t that helpful in determining how good they are at retaining staff, though they still give some insight into staff churn. At the moment the average length of service is just under 3.5 years:

As of end of May 2016 ICANN has 357 staff, though it expects to grow that number to 386 in the 2017 financial year.

They’re still actively advertising several open positions.
