Prior to the ICANN meeting in The Hague I wrote a couple of times about their insane waiver. I wrote to ICANN's CEO and the Chair of the ICANN Board, but that went nowhere. We even filed a reconsideration request along with the .na domain registry, but that was also rejected. And we were not alone. The ALAC also wrote to ICANN's Board formally about the waiver (full text … [Read more...] about ICANN Still Insisting Their Waiver is “Normal”

DNS Abuse Trending Down Says ICANN
According to an ICANN press release DNS Abuse is trending downwards. The assertion is based on data from a recently published report (pdf) from ICANN's CTO office. Here's the full release: In a recently published report, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) indicated that the global sum of DNS abuse dropped in "absolute terms and normalized … [Read more...] about DNS Abuse Trending Down Says ICANN
ICANN Demand You Sign Waiver to Attend Meeting
ICANN's upcoming meeting in June, which I mentioned earlier, is due to be held in person in The Hague. In order to attend you will need to register online in advance. That's not so odd. What is, however, is the very broad sweeping waiver they expect you to agree to. I'm not a lawyer, but I have had to review hundreds of contracts and agreements over the past 20 odd … [Read more...] about ICANN Demand You Sign Waiver to Attend Meeting
Vaccinations & Face Masks Required for ICANN Meeting
ICANN is going ahead with its Hague meeting in June as a "hybrid" event. It'll be the first "in person" ICANN meeting since autumn of 2019, so I suspect it will be quite busy, even though traditionally the "policy forum" meetings aren't the most popular of the three annual meetings. The venue for the meeting is The World Forum in the Hague. Amsterdam's Schipol airport is a … [Read more...] about Vaccinations & Face Masks Required for ICANN Meeting
ICANN Refuses Ukrainian Request to Pull Russian Internet Domains
As I mentioned earlier this week Ukrainians had requested that ICANN (and RIPE) take a variety of actions that would effectively have knocked Russia off the public internet. RIPE NCC's Board issued a statement to reiterate its neutral stance. Now ICANN, via its CEO Göran Marby, has issued a formal reply (PDF). It's as I'd have expected. It's polite, yet firm. On … [Read more...] about ICANN Refuses Ukrainian Request to Pull Russian Internet Domains
Ukrainians Call for Russia to be Pulled from Public Internet
One of the Ukrainian representatives to ICANN's Government Advisory Council (GAC) has sent a very broad sweeping request to ICANN and the IANA demanding that they essentially help to knock Russia off the internet. Apparently they're also writing to RIPE with similar requests. The letter, which was shared on Twitter by Bill Woodcock, is addressed to ICANN's CEO Göran Marby as … [Read more...] about Ukrainians Call for Russia to be Pulled from Public Internet
ICANN Releases Open Source RDAP Compliance Tool
ICANN has released the code for an RDAP conformance tool. The tool was developed for ICANN by Viagénie, who had already released a mobile RDAP client. It's good to see that the code is being released as open source under an Apache license. Both registries and registrars in the gTLD world are contractually obliged to run RDAP servers. Eventually these will replace whois … [Read more...] about ICANN Releases Open Source RDAP Compliance Tool
ICANN Appoints John Crain CTO
ICANN has appointed John Crain as CTO. Okay, his official job title is more of a mouthful: ICANN Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer As far as I can tell he's been filling the role on an interim basis since the departure of David Conrad last year. For the last couple of years Crain was ICANN's Chief Security, Stability, and Resiliency Officer (CSSRO). … [Read more...] about ICANN Appoints John Crain CTO
ICANN Continues Virtual Meetings Ahead of Hybrid Switch
(Republishing due to a technical issue!) ICANN has announced that their first public meeting of 2022 will not be "in person" and that they will stick to the "virtual" format. They have, however, stated that they want their June meeting, which is scheduled to be held in The Hague, to take place with a "hybrid" format. ICANN is notoriously conservative, so this … [Read more...] about ICANN Continues Virtual Meetings Ahead of Hybrid Switch
Some Changes at ICANN
ICANN's CEO publishes updates on the organisation from time to time. Yesterday his update was in relation to some staff changes. David Conrad will be leaving ICANN at the end of September. He's currently the organisation's CTO and has been heavily involved in a variety of technical projects internally and externally. Marby's blog post does not provide any explanation as … [Read more...] about Some Changes at ICANN
