Cruz and Duffy Introduce Legislation To Block IANA Transition Citing Internet Freedom

June 8, 2016 by Michele Neylon

US Senator Ted Cruz

Senator Ted Cruz has upped the ante in his campaign against ICANN and the IANA transition. Over the past few months Cruz has written multiple letters to ICANN and others. Today, however, he switched gears and introduced a bill to the US Senate. The bill's very title gives an indication of its tone and content: "The Protecting Internet Freedom Act". The "freedom" line isn't a … [Read more...] about Cruz and Duffy Introduce Legislation To Block IANA Transition Citing Internet Freedom

June 7, 2016 by Michele Neylon

Over the past year or so ICANN's meeting team and IT team have been working on a number of things to help make the overall meeting experience better. Australian ccTLD Registry Advertises CEO Job

June 5, 2016 by Michele Neylon

Back in March of this year auDA announced that they weren't renewing their then CEO's contract. So after over 15 years in the role Chris Disspain was leaving the organisation. Obviously his position could not be left vacant indefinitely, so it's little surprise that they recently published a job advertisement. There's no indication of salary or benefits that come with the … [Read more...] about Australian ccTLD Registry Advertises CEO Job

New Zealand’s ccTLD Proposes Flawed Whois Policy Change

June 5, 2016 by Michele Neylon

In common with several other ccTLDs, the .nz ccTLD is split into two bodies. While the registry operator is NZRS, the policies are managed by a different entity The Domain Name Commission. They've recently been reviewing their whois related policies and have come up with a proposal which would allow private individuals to opt out of public whois. However the proposal is … [Read more...] about New Zealand’s ccTLD Proposes Flawed Whois Policy Change

Earlier today ICANN's new CEO officially took the helm. Göran Marby is now officially ICANN CEO, taking over from interim CEO Akram Attalah. Marby also gets control of the ICANN CEO's Twitter account @icann_president and he (or more likely one of his team) has already started using it. Cruz Sees Himself As Protector Of Internet Freedom

May 22, 2016 by Michele Neylon

US Senator Ted Cruz

It looks like Senator Cruz' letter writing campaign isn't going to end any time soon. While previously the Senator and former US presidential hopeful was happy exchanging salvoes with ICANN he's now switched gears and is instead focussing on NTIA and the US Department of Commerce. The latest letter is focussed on a very strange interpretation of the IANA transition … [Read more...] about Cruz Sees Himself As Protector Of Internet Freedom

WordPress’ Automattic To Launch Dot Blog

May 13, 2016 by Michele Neylon

When you try to explain new TLDs to non-domain people it's often best to choose a clear example of a domain extension that illustrates the concept of the domain extension itself holding meaning. One of the examples that I and others have used more than once is .blog and the reaction has nearly always been of instant understanding and enlightenment. People "get it". If you're … [Read more...] about WordPress’ Automattic To Launch Dot Blog

May 5, 2016 by Michele Neylon

LACTLD logo

A few days ago LACTLD issued a statement about ICANN moving meetings out of their region. Today they've escalated matters and have written directly to the ICANN Board. Don't worry, they're still being very polite, but it's very clear from their latest missive that they are not very happy with ICANN. The letter, which is signed by not only LACTLD (Latin American and … [Read more...] about LACTLD vs ICANN: Letter Dispatched To ICANN Board
