ICANN Shortens Public Meetings

April 30, 2012 by Michele Neylon

At the last ICANN public meeting in Costa Rica the traditional Friday board meeting was incredibly short. For many people sitting in the room there were looks of surprise at how quickly the board was able to get through its agenda. Now ICANN has made it clear officially that Costa Rica was a precursor of things to come, with an announcement today that Friday is being removed … [Read more...] about ICANN Shortens Public Meetings

TLD Timeline Knock On Effects?

April 28, 2012 by Michele Neylon

Today is April 28th. At this stage ICANN should have already announced the new TLD applicants or been in a position to do so within a couple of days. Unfortunately they aren't going to be able to make any announcement and when they'll be able to do so is still unclear. The new TLD application system is still offline. The most recent update on the TAS outage is not … [Read more...] about TLD Timeline Knock On Effects?

ICANN CEO Being A Bit Too Quiet About New TLD Application System Downtime?

April 22, 2012 by Michele Neylon

New TLD Application System - Still Offline

ICANN took the online application system for new TLDs applicants offline 10 days ago. 10 days. I have to repeat that, because it's not something I or  anyone else expected. It's been quite interesting to watch how people have been reacting to the issue. Some people have been highly critical of the organisation (Yes - I wasn't exactly forgiving either), while others have been … [Read more...] about ICANN CEO Being A Bit Too Quiet About New TLD Application System Downtime?

Denic Breaks 15 Million Names

April 18, 2012 by Michele Neylon

.de registered names

Denic, the registry operator for .de, the country code for Germany, has now got over 15 million domain names registered. The registry operator is currently showing 15,000,530 names in total, so the 15 million milestone was probably hit in the last couple of hours. I suspect they'll make an official announcement in the next day or two.   Related … [Read more...] about Denic Breaks 15 Million Names

FM Registry Releases Top 40

April 17, 2012 by Michele Neylon

BRS Media, the people behing both .am and .fm domain registries, have released the rather aptly named "Top 40" of .fm domain names. The list includes some familiar names (to me), while others are not so well known, at least to a Westerner like me. The top 10 are: douban.fm - A Chinese music site. Seemingly targetted at a youthful demographic wbr.fm - Warner Brothers … [Read more...] about FM Registry Releases Top 40

New TLD Application System Offline Until?

April 17, 2012 by Michele Neylon

ICANN's new TLD application system is still offline and could remain so for the rest of the week. The latest update from ICANN staff published last night which, unfortunately, doesn't give much clarity in relation to timelines. The only time mentioned is 2359 this Friday, but that's in relation to providing an update - not actually re-opening the system. Here's the full … [Read more...] about New TLD Application System Offline Until?

They intend to make clarify when the application will be back online by 2359 UTC on Monday 16 April. ICM Submit Applications For More Adult Extensions

April 12, 2012 by Michele Neylon

ICM Registry, the company behind .xxx, are applying for 3 other adult strings in the new TLD round. The company has submitted applications for .adult, .porn and .sex. I may be mistaken, but I suspect that all three of the desired strings are going to prove problematic. If the debate and controversy around .xxx was heated at times, then any application for more overt … [Read more...] about ICM Submit Applications For More Adult Extensions

ICANN Takes “Fail” To A Whole New Level

April 12, 2012 by Michele Neylon

ICANN's new TLD application system is offline

Today is April 12 2012. It's also meant to be the day that the new TLD application window closes. Now it's not. No. ICANN has spectacularly failed to manage the new TLD process and will miss its own deadline by over a week. Any prospective new TLD applicant will be greeted with the following message if they try to access the TAS (the online system ICANN provides for … [Read more...] about ICANN Takes “Fail” To A Whole New Level
