This week at the IGF in Berlin one of the hot topics being discussed both in hallways and various sessions is the sale of PIR by ISOC. Yesterday at lunchtime Access Now organised a "town hall" in the hallway where several current and former ISOC board members were in attendance. Several of the ISOC board members spoke at the event and tried to explain their thinking. … [Read more...] about ISOC to Hold Webinar on the PIR Sale

ISOC logo

ISOC's CEO Andrew Sullivan has put out a statement on the sale of .org which tries to address the points raised by the Save Dot Org campaigners. The statement addresses the concerns about pricing, rights protection mechanisms as well as how ISOC ended up running .org in the first place. It's worth a read, though it's clear from some of the very passionate interventions … [Read more...] about ISOC CEO Releases Statement on .Org Sale

RIPE NCC logo (2015 version)

RIPE NCC has run out of IPv4. This is hardly surprising and they had predicted it would happen early this week. The last IPv4 assignment was made at 1535 CET today: Today, at 15:35 UTC+1 on 25 November 2019, we made our final /22 IPv4 allocation from the last remaining addresses in our available pool. We have now run out of IPv4 addresses. Our announcement will not … [Read more...] about Europe has run out of IPv4 Address Space

PIR and Ethos Capital Answer Key Questions About ORG Sale

November 24, 2019 by Michele Neylon

PIR and Ethos Capital, as well as ISOC, have obviously been coming under a lot of pressure since the announcement of the sale of PIR and the .org domain registry. Since the announcement of the acquisition there has been coverage not only in the domain and internet industry news sites, but also in more mainstream publications. As I mentioned yesterday a group of nonprofits also … [Read more...] about PIR and Ethos Capital Answer Key Questions About ORG Sale

Domains and the 2019 UK Elections

November 23, 2019 by Michele Neylon

It's 2019, so any political party that wants to reach the electorate is going to have a digital footprint of some kind. The bigger and better organised parties will invest heavily in a full digital strategy. This is not new. What's also not new is politicians, lobbyists and political activists setting up various websites that use domains that are a little misleading. Over … [Read more...] about Domains and the 2019 UK Elections

Nonprofits Mobilise Against PIR Sale

November 23, 2019 by Michele Neylon

27 nonprofit organisations have come together to put pressure on ISOC and stop the sale of PIR, the operator of the .org domain. They're also asking ISOC to find an alternative nonprofit to take over the role: Decisions affecting .ORG must be made with the consultation of the NGO community, overseen by a trusted community leader. If the Internet Society (ISOC) can no longer … [Read more...] about Nonprofits Mobilise Against PIR Sale

Submit Your Domains for Namescon Auction

November 22, 2019 by Michele Neylon

I've always found live auctions to be fascinating. It doesn't matter what is being sold, but there's always a "buzz" in the room. Domain auctions aren't that different so the upcoming auction at NamesCon in Austin, Texas could be good fun. Of course how much "fun" it'll be is going to be dependant in part on the domains that are up for grabs on the day. If they're all super … [Read more...] about Submit Your Domains for Namescon Auction
