IEDR Boss Interviewed in Sunday Business Post

David Curtin, IEDR CEO, was interviewed during the week by Sunday Business Post’s technology editor Adrian Weckler The full interview is available online. Some of the questions posed by Weckler revealed some of the more awkward and restrictive views of the registry, including its policy on censoring domain names. However it is interesting to note… Continue reading IEDR Boss Interviewed in Sunday Business Post

One and Two Character Domains? Dotmobi and dotcoop

Short domains are more memorable. You can’t really argue with that. However a lot of registries don’t allow them for a variety of reasons. The Isle of Man is one of the few exceptions that springs to mind, as they allow pretty much any length, but charge more for the shorter ones. The Irish domain… Continue reading One and Two Character Domains? Dotmobi and dotcoop

ICANN To Squash Domain Tasting?

It looks like “domain tasting” and “front running” may become part of internet history, as the GNSO has voted to axe them. According to John Levine’s recent post the GNSO’s vote would mean that the policy would come into effect pretty quickly unless a large number of ICANN’s board vote against it.

Should Registries Contact Registrants About Renewals?

I’ve always had mixed feelings about registries contacting registrants directly. On one level it doesn’t bother me in the least, but on another I can see how it causes confusion Over the past couple of years we’ve been dealing with an ever-growing number of registries and seen a wide variety of policies and implementations, but… Continue reading Should Registries Contact Registrants About Renewals?

ICANN To Axe Add Grace Period – Domain Tasting On Its DeathBed

Domain tasting in its current form may soon become a thing of the past. The blogs and mailing lists have been buzzing for most of today following on from ICANN’s announcement that they were going to try and axe the AGP (Add Grace Period) which has been abused by registrars. While initially it wasn’t 100%… Continue reading ICANN To Axe Add Grace Period – Domain Tasting On Its DeathBed

IE Domain Registry Updates Policy on Personal Domains – Finally!

One of the more frustrating rules covering IE domains is that related to personal names. Under the current rules you can only register yourfullname.ie if you are a celebrity or trade under that name (there are workaounds, but they’re not nice!). I’ve been nagging the IE Domain Registry about this policy for quite some time… Continue reading IE Domain Registry Updates Policy on Personal Domains – Finally!

Shaping a TLD – Policy and more

Caroline Greer’s latest article on the dotMobi blog caught my attention, as I was thinking about registry policies and development quite a bit over the last few days, especially in light of recent news concerning the IE namespace. Dotmobi, in common with a lot of other registries, has an advisory group that is able to… Continue reading Shaping a TLD – Policy and more

The Battle Over Whois Policy Continues

One of the sessions I attended at the ICANN meeting in Lisbon earlier this year centred on whois. It became abundantly clear to me that the various stakeholders had very different views and objectives on how to treat and publish registrant data. I wouldn’t care to get into the finer points of the arguments, as… Continue reading The Battle Over Whois Policy Continues
